This first topic is focuses on making the transition (from school to university), as well as learning styles and characteristics of successful students.
TRANSITIONS FROM SCHOOL
TO UNIVERSITY LIVES
School |
University |
Parents will manage and control your time |
You will manage your own time |
Parents will
remind you of your responsibilities |
Remind your
responsibilities to yourself and set your prioritize |
Parents and teachers are your guidance |
You’d be your own guidance |
You had known
your classmate and schoolmate for years (almost the same people each year) |
More diverse classmate
and people in terms of race, age, religion and life experience |
Classes are often small with a lot of
instructor-student interaction |
Classes are larger and more complex, more impersonal |
CHARACTERISTIC OF SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS
Identifying
characteristics of successful students is important for a lot of reason including personal growth, educational enhancement, motivation for others and
yourself and more. It also gives
students the skills they need to successfully handle the obstacles in their
academic and personal lives. Each student needs to have these great characteristics
in order to become successful and focus on their main objectives. So,
here’s my take on characteristics of successful students:
CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS |
FIND
YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE You
are ultimately the only one responsible for your own time here. Ask the
question you need answers to and get the help you need. Make the experience
what you want it to be.
|
FIND YOUR WHY What’s your motivation doing this?
Personal fulfilment, financial stability, personal pride or the love of
learning? Find your motivation and let it drive you further forward.
|
PRACTICE
TO MANAGE YOURSELF Manage
your plan, schedule, measure the results and hold yourself accountable for
what needs to be done.
|
BE INDEPENDENT Self-reliance is valuable, but so is
making the choice to invest in mutually-supportive relationship. Find people
you can help and find people who can help you.
|
HAVE
A HIGH EQ (EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE) IQ
is impressive itself but EQ is how you’ll rise above. Feel emotions but
manage to control them. Show empathy to others, read the room and don’t
forget to be kind.
|
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF Don’t forget that regardless of the
grades or diploma/degrees, you are enough. Don’t forget to love yourself, be
yourself and find the good in yourself.

LEARNING STYLE INVENTORY
Each style represents the technique of receiving and processing the information. There are three learning style which is auditory, visual and kinesthetic. The picture below is a little explanation about these 3 learning styles.
Based on the diagram, we can see that they are three types of learning style which is visual, auditory and kinesthetics. Each learning style represents a different approach to acquiring our knowledge. Also, each individual may have a dominant style or a combination of these preferences. So, by understanding our learning style, we can help ourselves in adapting study habits and strategies to enhance our learning effectiveness.
MY PERSONAL LEARNING STYLE PLAN
Based on the test above, my marks on the visual and auditory learning style is almost the same. Therefore, I think I have Visual-Auditory learning style. Here’s my personal learning style plan:
1.Playing music while completing homework or studying (lofi, white sound, etc)
2.Create mind maps
3.Use different highlighters and pens to write my notes for distinct topics
4.Watch YouTube videos on certain topics
5. Review and try to understand the lecture slides given before class
TOPIC 2 - GOAL SETTING
The second topic of this will focus primarily on goal setting.
WHAT’S THE MEANING OF
GOALS?
the process of deciding what you want to achieve or what you want someone else to achieve over a particular period.
THE FIVE
STEPS APPROACH
When we want to approach our goals, the S.M.A.R.T. criteria
is a great and widely used to setting a clear and achievable goals. S.M.A.R.T. is an
acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and
Time-bound. Based on the diagram, here are my thoughts on the five steps approach to achieve goals.
1.Specific: I think goals
should be clear and specific. This means defining exactly what you want to
accomplish, why it’s important, who’s involved, where it’s located and which
resources or constraints are involved.
2.Measurable:
Goals should have criteria for measuring progress and success. This will help you to keep tracking the progress and always stay motivated.
3.Achievable: In my opinion, goals should be realistic and attainable. They should stretch your abilities
but still remain possible.
4.Relevant: Goals also should matter and be aligned with other relevant goals. They should be
pertinent to the broader objectives you want to achieve
5.Time-bound: We also must not forget that goals
should have a clear timeline, including a start and finish date. This will help you to prioritize tasks and a sense of urgency.
To summarize, the process of defining S.M.A.R.T. goals guarantees that your targets are specific, reachable and in line with your overarching goals. It will also gives you a meaning to keep tracking your progress and maintaining motivation. This systematic strategy improves the likelihood of success and aids in efficient time and resource management.

TOPIC 3- LIBRARY & CAMPUS RESOURCES
For this topic, I will talk about some basic knowledge on the library resources and more.
Here in UiTM Machang, we
have a library named “PERPUSTAKAAN TENGKU ANIS” for all UiTM citizens. The books
in this library have a lot of purposes, ranging from educational to
recreational. They are like a house of textbooks, reference books, and academic
journals that support students, lecturers and researchers in their studies and
scholarly activities. With this, we can provide access to a wide arrange of
subjects, facilitating learnings and intellectual growth. Other than that, our
library also offer a range of reference materials, such as encyclopaedias and dictionaries
which help answer specific questions and support fact-checking. Overall, books
in a library are fundamental to education, research and providing equitable
access to information.
This library also provide a lot of computers with free Wi-Fi for the convenience for all UiTM citizens. Computers in this library offering a variety of uses and benefits that enhance both library operations and the experience of its users which is students and also lecturers. Computers in our library provide access to a wide range of digital resources, including e-books, online journals, research databases, and multimedia materials. It also will be used to internet access for research, email, social networking, and other online activities such as online research tools, bibliographic databases, and other resources that aid in academic and personal research. Overall, I have a lot of good experience with this library because the good functionality and service offerings that making them more efficient for all citizens in UiTM.
TOPIC 4 – TIME MANAGEMENT
& ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS
Managing time effectively is an important key to fulfilling university career. In this chapter, we will also provides ideas for organizing activities and tips to help students focus on important tasks.
1. FIXED-COMMITMENT CALENDAR
2. JOB TASK ANALYSIS
By creating a prioritized to-do list, I can help myself manage my time effectively and ensure that I will stay on top of their academic and focus on personal responsibilities. Here is some of my prioritized to-do list:

|
In conclusion, using this approach will ensure that high-priority tasks are completed first, while still making progress on medium and low-priority items. It is also includes personal care to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
PROCRASTINATION
Procrastination is the act of putting off or delaying important activities is known as procrastination. It frequently entails putting immediate gratification or avoiding suffering ahead of long-term objectives or obligations. Procrastination can take many different forms, such putting off critical work till the last minute, delaying decisions, or avoiding vital tasks by indulging in less important activities.
Although there isn't a clear connection between procrastination and time management, there is one nonetheless. Setting priorities for work, managing time well, and staying focused are all essential to achieving objectives quickly. People who have trouble managing their time may be more likely to put off things until later since they haven't planned their time well enough to complete them on time. The causes of why we are procrastinate are based on the picture below:
By developing strong time management skills and implementing these strategies to overcome procrastination, students or anyone in general can increase productivity, reduce stress and achieve their goals more effectively.
TOPIC 5 – MEMORY, LEARNING & IMPROVING CONCENTRATION
This topic will discuss on memory, improving concentration, and the reading system aims to enable students to understand the basic processes of memory, and apply the memory skills in the student's learning.
MEMORY STRATEGIES
What is a memory?
Memory is the term used to describe the mental processes involved in gathering, storing, holding onto, and then retrieving information. Encoding, storing, and retrieval are the three main operations that take place in memory.
Information recovery and preservation are two aspects of human memory. But this isn't a perfect method. People occasionally forget or misremember things. Other instances, data is just not stored in memory correctly to begin with.
For example, forgetting birthdays is a common relatively small inconvenience caused by memory issues. But they can also indicate more serious illnesses like dementia and Alzheimer's disease. These ailments impair functioning and quality of life.
What is a brain?
The brain is the primary organ of the nervous system in humans and other animals. It processes sensory data, controls physical processes, and permits awareness, thought, emotion, and memory. The brain communicates with the rest of the body through a network of nerves and neurotransmitters, allowing for intricate control and coordination of various physiological and psychological processes.
Types of memory
Causes of poor memory
1.High
levels of stress and anxiety can interfere with attention and cognitive
function, making it difficult to encode and retrieve memories.
2. Lack of Sleep. Sleep is
crucial for memory consolidation. Insufficient or poor-quality sleep can impair
the brain's ability to process and store new information.
3. Poor Nutrition like a diet
lacking in essential nutrients, such as vitamins B, C, D, and E, omega-3 fatty
acids, and antioxidants can negatively affect brain function and memory.
4. Medical Conditions such as depression, thyroid disorders, and neurological diseases
like Alzheimer's can directly impact memory and cognitive abilities.
How to improve memory strategies
Improving memory can enhance various aspects of life, from academic performance to professional success and also personal relationships. Below are some of the ways you can improve your memory:
1. Keep your mind engaged by doing mentally taxing things like solving puzzles, picking up new skills, or playing memory games.
2. Engage in regular exercise: Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which enhances cognitive and memory performance.
3. Make time for sleep: Try to get between seven and nine hours of good sleep per night to enhance cognitive performance and aid with memory consolidation.
4. Consume a balanced diet: Eat foods like fruits, vegetables, seafood, and nuts that are high in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins that are vital for brain function.
CONCENTRATION STRATEGIES
What is concentration
Concentration is the ability to focus one's attention on a specific task or thought while ignoring distractions. Concentration involves sustained mental effort and the efficient use of cognitive resources to process information and complete activities.
Causes of poor concentration
There are many causes of poor concentration such as:
1. Excessive amounts of tension or worry. It can cloud one's judgement and make it challenging to concentrate on a task.
2. Sleep deprivation. It can affects attention and concentration which is the two cognitive processes that make it difficult to maintain focus.
3.Bad Nutrition. A diet deficient in vital nutrients can cause exhaustion and lower cognitive performance, which can impair focus.
4. Distractions: Outside distractions can make it difficult to focus and concentrate, such as loud noises, social media, and multitasking.
5. Medical Conditions. Certain chronic illnesses, depression, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can all have a direct effect on an individual's ability to focus and maintain attention.

READING TEXT
SQ3R method - It is important for students to read using this method so they can understand the information that they received.
TOPIC 6 – TAKING LECTURE
NOTES
NOTE-TAKING STRATEGIES
Why are note-taking strategies are important?
- Enhances memory retention
- Promotes active listeners
- Allows you to personalize the study material
- Enhances your learning efficiency
- Facilitates effective review
- Boost creativity
- Minimizes distrations
Anyway, here's also the 5R in note-taking to enhances my and also your learning habits:
NOTE-TAKING EXERCISE USING THR CORNELL METHOD
What are Cornell notes?
Cornell note-taking is a
popular note-taking method for organizing and summarizing notes. This method is
typically results in better overall comprehension. This note-taking method was
invented by Professor Walter Paul of Cornell University in 1950’s
What make this
note-taking method so effective?
It’s simple. They're so easy to make, it also
will improve your understanding of the content as you go and be a better information
when you want to use for review.
Moreover, this note-taking method also great for active summarizing. This means you need to have a certain level of understanding, and this note-taking method will prompts you to get there.
This method also create an international note-taking. Cornell notes encourage mindfulness and focus when taking notes. You have to pull out key points and reflect on the material instead of simply writing every little thing down.
- Use the left column to write questions that you can use to ask yourself when revising2.
- Sometimes you may reach at the end of the paper before you’re actually finished taking your notes. So, even if your notes aren’t complete, don’t forgot the summary. Write the summary based on the existing points on the page only
- Cornell notes are written to be easy to review. So, make sure to review them!
TOPIC 7 – ACADEMIC
INTEGRITY & PERFORMANCE
GPA WORKSHEET
In this topic, we will discuss about calculating a grade point average.
The final examination results and assessments at the end of every semester are assigned a Grade Point Average (GPA) and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) which represent a student’s academic achievement.
A Grade Point Average
(GPA) refers to the calculated average of the letter grades a student earns in
each semester following a 0 to 4.0 scale
Cumulative Grade Point
Average (CGPA) refers to the overall GPA, which includes dividing the number of
quality points earned in all courses attempted by the total credit hours in all
attempted courses.
5. What would happen if Amelia had received a D in Cell Bio instead of the B+?
PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism is the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own. Plagiarism also means using someone else's work without giving them proper credit. For your information, in academic writing, plagiarizing involves using words, ideas or information from a source without citing it correctly.
Examples of plagiarism |
Why is it wrong? |
Copying parts
of a text word for word, without quotation marks |
It makes it
seem like these are your own words. |
Paraphrasing a
text by changing a few words or altering the sentence structure, without
citing the source |
It makes it
seem like you came up with the idea, when in fact you just rephrased someone
else’s idea. |
Giving
incorrect information about a source |
If readers
can’t find the cited source, they can’t check the information themselves. |
Quoting so
much from a source that it makes up the majority of your text |
Even with
proper citations, you’re not making an original contribution if you rely so
much on someone else’s words. |
Reusing work
you’ve submitted for a previous assignment, without citing yourself |
Even though
it’s your own work, the reader should be informed that it’s not completely
new but comes from previous research. |
Submitting a
text written entirely by someone else (e.g., a paper you bought from a
ghostwriter) |
Not doing the
work yourself is academically dishonest, undermines your learning, and is
unfair to other students. |
- Keep track of the resources
that you consult in your research
- Paraphrasing from your sources
by using "paraphrasing tool" and adding your own ideas
- Using a "plagiarism
checker" before you submit your work/assignment
In summary, plagiarism will sabotage the trust and credibility of academic work. Due to this, when someone using someone else’s work or ideas without proper acknowledgment, whether done intentionally or unintentionally, it will threaten both of their work. To avoid plagiarism, it is essential to engage with academic integrity policies and resources provided by educational institutions and more. By adhering to these practices, students can maintain integrity in their work, contribute genuinely to their field of study, and avoid the severe consequences associated with plagiarism.
CONCLUSION
To conclude, mastering study
skills subject is not only helping you with academic success and personal
growth, but it is also increase the range of strategies and habits that ill enhance
our learning. We also can improve our retention and foster a deeper understanding
of the material.
Furthermore, by cultivating these study skills, students can achieve a better academic outcomes and develop a lifelong learning habits. Implementing these strategies will not only enhances our educational performance but also builds confidence and resilience, preparing students for the challenges ahead their time.
